This book enjoyed great success last year in Hardcover and has flown of the shelves this year in paperback. At a measley $8.00 for some of the best humorous writing in memory it's no wonder. Sedaris maintains a level of curmudgeonly, sarcastic wit that hoiks down Santa's snowy beard to reveal the plastered, resting actor underneath and aims a well-placed kick at Tiny Tim's crutches.
Having said that, Sedaris is no Scrooge. There's plenty of joy in his season, just not where you'd expect to find it, and that's what makes this such an excellent piece of work. This is Christmas fare for anyone who's hosted in-laws for over a week or had to work in retail on Christmas Eve.
"The Santaland Diaries" should be read to us kids who are sick of hearing "The Night Before Christmas", or have made up ruder words to it. I can't promise that you'll laugh out loud whilst reading this, but if you try and suppress it you might just be mopping up your chair afterwards.

This is a very funny and subversive collection that focuses on the
yuletide season. Sedaris' humor can be very dark but these stories might
be a really good cure for the holiday blues.
