Located in the heart of the Finger Lakes in Ithaca, New York ("the most enlightened" town in the U.S. according to the Utne Reader), The Bookery is actually two quite different bookstores under one roof. Bookery I, opened in 1975, is Ithaca's oldest and largest used and out-of-print bookstore. It was joined in 1985 by Bookery II, a dynamic, independent bookstore with more than 70,000 titles in stock. In a town noted for having a higher proportion of bookstores per capita than most, Bookery I & II were rated "the two best bookstores" in Ithaca by the Lonely Planet Guide to New York.

Our approach to bookselling extends beyond our well-stocked shelves, into the cultural life of the community, where we

  • support a monthly literary journal, The Bookpress
  • host weekly readings, discussions and book-signings in our Off Campus at The Bookery series
  • provide books for community events, such as the Old House Fair, the Jewish Book Fair, and summer productions at the Hangar Theatre
  • maintain a year-round selection of scripts and plays at the Community Arts Partnership ticket counter for all local and regional productions
Of course, the heart of The Bookery is our dedicated staff of 15 people who keep the store open seven days and six evenings a week. Whether your inquiry is about a forthcoming book by your favorite author or a long out-of-print title by an author whose name you can't remember, chances are The Bookery staff can help you find what you're seeking.

We deal with hundreds of publishers and small presses on a regular basis, and our search service for out-of-print books has a well-earned reputation for going the extra mile to get the book you need.

Remember, all your questions and orders are just an email away from The Bookery. Better still, visit us in the Dewitt Mall, a turn-of-the-century high school building that was converted in 1971 into a delightful assemblage of unique shops and eateries. Until you get here, bookmark this page to keep up with the latest in literature, poetry, the performing arts, science, scholarly subjects, travel books and maps. And don't forget our extensive and highly praised children's book section where our expert staff can help you find just the right book for kids, from toddlers to teenagers.
